Aims, Skills and Learning Outcomes

The objectives of the UC are:
- Understand the dynamics of families today
- Know Mediation as a strategy for resolving conflicts and preventing violence;
- Acquire knowledge about the legal frameworks of Mediation in Portugal;
- Recognize the importance of mediation in a school context as a conflict resolution strategy;
- Know the role of the family and school mediator;
- Conceive, substantiate and implement proposals and mediation devices suitable for intervention contexts: school, community and family

1. Introduction to mediation in the context of childhood
2. Ethics and legal aspects in mediation with children
2. Role of the mediator in the mediation process with children
3. Mediation and children in family conflicts (divorce, parental responsibilities, promotion and protection), in a school context, in situations of violence and with children with special needs.
4. Current issues such as online mediation and technologies applied in mediation with children

Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the curricular unit's learning objectives

This Curricular Unit aims to provide legal and social information in the field in which the child is inserted in order to prepare future interveners to understand the normative framework that regulates family relationships, with special focus on the field of mediation, and the system of promotion and protection of these children in the face of physical, psychological or social adversities. This knowledge is considered essential for efficient and effective performance as a social interventionist in your daily life.
