The aim is the student to recognize ageing as a bio-psycho-social process that results from the way people have lived throughout their lives and from the opportunities available to them, and to be able, in an institutional context, to trigger interventions that improve the quality of life of older people.
1 Ways of knowing and doing in social gerontology
1.1 Ageing as a biological, psychological and social phenomenon: articulating the introductory theoretical approaches acquired in the various disciplines to analyze the main problems and challenges facing older people
1.2 Synthesizing the main problems and challenges related to the public under study (e.g. physical dependence, illness or cognitive deterioration; reduction or loss of social relationships; social isolation; lack of roles, enrichment activities or social participation)
1.3 Defining individualized interventions (care and individual development plans) or group interventions as a response strategy to the main problems diagnosed - rationale, methodologies, resources and evaluation
1.4 Communication and empathetic listening as tools for better understanding the subjectivity of others
1.5 Professional roles of the social gerontologist in the internship context
The contents of the syllabus are selected in such a way as to cover all the subjects involved and are consistent with the main objectives of the course.

The aim of this curricular unit is for students to have the opportunity to observe and debate problems inherent in practice, translating theoretical knowledge into action programs, which are constantly being improved. As such, this curricular unit is made up of theoretical and practical seminars, based on pedagogical strategies that encourage active learning and the problematization of the experiences observed during internships. In addition to the presentation of content using conventional and multimedia elements, brainstorming techniques will be used to promote debates, group work on actions to be planned and developed during the internship, as well as simulation/role-playing to train skills aimed at dealing with real situations. Research and critical analysis of written and/or audiovisual material (e.g. scientific articles, guidance manuals, documentaries) will also be used in this course.
