Aims, Skills and Learning Outcomes

The aim is the student to recognize ageing as a bio-psycho-social process that results from the way people have lived throughout their lives and from the opportunities available to them, and to be able, in an institutional context, to trigger interventions that improve the quality of life of older people.

At the end of the course unit, students are expected to be able to:
(i) understand the diversity of the elderly population in terms of age, life trajectories, health status, functionality, culture, language, religion, sexual orientation; (ii) recognize the existence of biological, psychological and social factors that influence the different modes and processes of ageing; (iii) design and implement individual or group psychosocial interventions that contribute to the functional, cognitive and social optimization of individuals; (iv) apply interpersonal relationship strategies that contribute to building respectful, confidential relationships that promote positive changes.

Literature Notes

The teacher meets with students in Office 3 on Wednesdays (14:00-16:30) and Thursdays (14:00-16:00). The lecturer can adjust her timetable to meet the needs of student workers, and appointments must be made in advance by email.

Learning Methods

The aim of this curricular unit is for students to have the opportunity to observe and debate problems inherent in practice, translating theoretical knowledge into action programs, which are constantly being improved. As such, this curricular unit is made up of theoretical and practical seminars, based on pedagogical strategies that encourage active learning and the problematization of the experiences observed during internships. In addition to the presentation of content using conventional and multimedia elements, brainstorming techniques will be used to promote debates, group work on actions to be planned and developed during the internship, as well as simulation/role-playing to train skills aimed at dealing with real situations. Research and critical analysis of written and/or audiovisual material (e.g. scientific articles, guidance manuals, documentaries) will also be used in this course.
