Aims, Skills and Learning Outcomes

Provide students with substantive knowledge about the great evolutions of contemporary societies in order to break with the stereotyped visions of social phenomena and, in particular, the phenomenon of aging:
a) Understand that aging is more than a biological process and that the concept of the elderly has evolved throughout the civilizational process;
b) Understand what are social regularities from the study of the demographic transition;
c) Understand and explain the main economic, political and cultural factors that are the genesis of the phenomenon of aging;
d) Be able to systematically use the main instruments for the collection and processing of statistical data and to interpret them by reconciling qualitative and quantitative approaches.

Learning Methods

Lectures: pedagogy centred on the recipients of the messages and based on the articulation between presentations by the lecturer and moments of reflection and debate, mobilising student contributions;
Tutorial classes: presentation and discussion of work done by students.

Continuous Assessment

Students can choose one of the following assessment methods

1. Distributed assessment (Article 11 of the Knowledge Assessment Regulations) which consists of the following elements:

a) Completion of an individual written test which will take place during the exam season. Weighting: 50%.

b) An individual poster with an oral presentation. Weighting: 40 per cent.
Students should consult the guidance document available in the UC documents folder on Sigarra.

c) Attendance: 10% (students who attend more than 75% of classes will be given an extra 2 points).

Note: If the student is a student worker, attendance is not taken into account (unless the student so wishes) and the weighting of each individual test is 50%.


2. Final Exam (Article 12 of the Knowledge Assessment Regulations):
A final written exam.
