To provide students with knowledge of the essential concepts of fundamental rights. Issues relating to the historical and conceptual evolution of human rights, the nature of rights, freedoms and guarantees in the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, the theoretical foundations underlying fundamental rights, and national, regional and international protection systems are considered relevant.

The programme includes modules covering the fundamental concepts of human rights, including the history of human rights, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the main international treaties and conventions. This enables students to acquire a solid understanding of the essential principles and concepts. The syllabus is structured to challenge students to critically analyse complex issues such as human rights conflicts, ethical dilemmas and contemporary challenges.

Lectures and classroom discussions are used to provide students with a solid foundation of knowledge about the fundamental concepts of human rights. Oral presentations and debates encourage students to develop effective communication skills, helping them to express their opinions and ideas clearly and persuasively.
